Show up to class on time with questions and your enthusiastic self.
I will expect a report similar to a lab report detailing what you observed during the dissections.

Final Project
Your final project will be your final exam. Each of you (either in groups of 2 or 4) are required to create and present your final. Your final project is on a topic in psychology that you have discussed with me. The format must be a multimedia presentation. We will be heading to the computer lab this thursday and i will show you how to use the imovie and iphoto program . The format can also be a powerpoint presentation. You will be required to present it during finals week to the class. The idea would be that I would be able to use your presentation in my psychology class in the following years.
See Me for More Details.

AP Review

Hey Folks -

Since this week is STAR testing your classes are limited. I have received some questions regarding the best way to present the data that you have collected. Remember that you should have already collected data regarding the amount of times/day/hour....that you notice this behavior. You were also to understand the antecedents that occur prior to this behavior that you wish to change.

For example let's say I'm trying to quit swearing. I need to get a baseline or figure out how often I swear. I count the amount of times over two days that I swear. This information will be part of my data and will go on a graph. The third day I take a look at the antecedents or behavior that occurs prior to swearing. For example, on the third day I notice that I swear most often when I drive my car. This is an antecedent to the behavior that I would like to change. Over the next few days I would try to reduce my swearing by:
1) Knowing that every time i get behind the wheel I'm more likely to swear - so prepare ahead of time to say "shucks" or that "that person must be mentally challenged" instead of my usual cuss words.
2) Reward myself with 10 extra minutes in the swimming pool if I did not swear once in the car.
3) Observe this behavior over three days and get the data totals.

This data should be recorded and first put in a data table. I would then use the data from the table to display the results in a graphic form.

I would include all data on the graph using a separate color to display the first two days of observing my behavior, another color to show when I was observing the antecedents and finally a third color to show when I had my plan of using other words and reward system.

email me with specific questions
Happy New Year!

Dec 15th

This week is the last week prior to our winter break. Scour the internet, magazines, and newspapers for articles on learning, how people or animals learn. Compare and contrast your article to the information found in chapter 8 of your text. One way to do this is to keep a pad of paper next to your bed. If you wake during the night write on the pad what you were dreaming about or what your were thinking. If you find that the night brings you an undisturbed well rested sleep you may wish to set your alarm for about five hours into your sleep. The alarm will wake you and you will have an opportunity to write down your dreams prior to falling back into a deep slumber. i recommend that you try this on a Friday or Saturday night so you arrive well rested to school on Monday.

Once you are able to record a few dreams think about what you were dreaming about (topics or themes) what kinds of sensations were you perceiving while dreaming (temperature, smells, wind) and did you experience any emotions?

Bring your sensations, topics and emotions to class for next Thursday, Nov 13th.

FIELD TRIP Wednesday Nov. 19th 1:50 - 3:15

Those who are interested in heading over to Buena Vista Elementary School to investigate Piaget's developmental stages will need a signed permission slip. We will be heading over to BV as a group taking the 48 bus. We will spend about 45 min at the school and you will be finished at about 3:15. This is an excellent opportunity to explore Piaget's developmental stages, experience the way a small child thinks and get extra credit for your Psychology Class.

Chapters 6 and 7

This week we are going to finish up chapter 6 and move into chapter 7 "States of consciousnesses". By Tuesday I expect that you have read through infancy and childhood. Thanks to Shelia for picking up that I had Columbus day down as this Monday when it is really next week. So please come to school tomorrow and read in your book, take sq3r notes and prepare to discuss your readings with your classmates.

Homework:

Due Thursday:
Search the newspaper or the Internet for an article relating to developmental psychology. The field of developmental psychology is quite broad, so try to limit your article to a topic that appears in your textbook or is a story of current event.

Bring the article to class on Thursday and prepare to share out your findings. Prepare a short summary of the article to hand in to me as homework.

Test Prologue ch 1,2,3

This Tuesday we are having a test on the prologue, Chapter 1, 2, 3. We are going on a journey inside the human mind to find out how our mind works in relation to our behavior. To get you warmed up to the idea of "what is psychology" I have set out two tasks for you to complete over the summer. A summer reading list if you please. Oh and please don't wait till August 15th to take this on, do it now. Trust me when I say that you will be so fascinated by all of this you will need the whole summer to chew on your own thoughts.

1) Read the book "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat" by noted neurologist Oliver Sacks.
Looking for a link to Amazon click here.
What to do? Read the book and make copious (many) comments in the books margins, highlight interesting sections and overall get a good sense of the book. During the first week of school you will be asked to write a paragraph essay on a section of this book so be prepared!

2) Read the following web article
http://www.arachnoid.com/psychology

Read the article "Is Psychology a Science" by Paul Lutus.

Prepare an essay on this topic. Sort out for yourself your views on whether you believe psychology to be a science or not.
Email me with questions!!!

Have a Happy Summer

Ms. Trusso
